A New Jersey Assembly committee has advanced a proposed law to combat landlord collusion, which is allegedly driving up apartment prices. The bill targets the use of third-party software platforms that collect nonpublic rental information from multiple landlords and suggest rent increases. Over 50 percent of renters in New Jersey are deemed'rent burdened', a measure of spending more than 30 percent of income on rent. The proposed law would also address rising demand for data centers and crypto mining. Republican lawmakers have reintroduced legislation that would lower business taxes in the state, with Assemblyman Christopher DePhillips (NJ-40) among the sponsors of A2654 and A2703 proposing to repeal a 2.5 percent transit surcharge on businesses making over $10 million. A Democratic state senator has introduced a bill that would require voters to authorize new state bonds for school construction, expansion, and renovation projects.
