Check Your Health- Make an Advance Directive: Decide Your Medical Care Wishes
Published on April 17, 2026.
National Healthcare Decision Day is April 16, encouraging people to create an advance directive or legal document that identifies who can make medical decisions for you if you become too sick to do so. The form identifies who you would like to rely on, a healthcare agent, and informs healthcare providers and family about what types of treatment you want or don't want. These directives are important legal documents, but do not require a lawyer to complete one. An advance directive can be updated any time your health is declining, or your healthcare agent dies or becomes unable to serve as your agent. Natalie King, a palliative care physician with Intermountain Health, suggests giving these directives to your loved ones so they can focus on loving and supporting them during a difficult time.
