Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, has admitted that millions of Tesla owners will need hardware upgrades to run a future version of its Full Self-Driving software that doesn't require human supervision. This revelation led to readers reaching out to TechCrunch readers, including ex-Tesla engineers and industry founders. The company will need to physically upgrade each of its Hardware 3 cars, which would require Tesla to set up microfactories in several major cities to handle potentially millions of vehicles. This upgrade could require a significant investment in Tesla’s capital expenditures budget, which has been expanded to $25 billion this year. Redwood Materials laid off around 135 employees, or roughly 10% of its workforce, as it restructures to accommodate its growing energy storage business. Several executives have recently left the company, including COO Chris Lister, and at least three other VPs, with the focus on reducing layers of management.
