Austin Street project cost more than expected — and it's behind schedule

The city of Houston has been working on a drainage project in Midtown's Austin Street for a year and a half, which is already $1.6 million over its initial estimate. The project involves waterline and drainage improvements, and a rehabilitation of the roadway. While initially scheduled to be completed in summer 2025, work has been delayed several times due to "waterline conflicts" and inadequate pavement and striping standards. Once completed, Austin Street will no longer have a protected bike lane, but instead have a paint-only bike lane for northbound cyclists. The final cost for road surface rehabilitation has yet to be realized.
