Sessions by the Bay, San Diego County's first and only cannabis consumption lounge, opened its doors on April 20, 2025. The business, co-founded by Alex Ayon and his wife, operates as a two-story venue with a 16,000-square-foot lounge and a retail dispensary. The owner says the business has exceeded expectations and is seeing new customers every day. To celebrate the one-year anniversary, Sessions is hosting a weekend of events, including live music, brand activations with cannabis company representatives, and a farmer’s market featuring local San Diego vendors. The lounge operates under National City's commercial cannabis ordinance, which requires cannabis businesses to pay a 5% monthly gross receipts fee to the city, an annual community benefit contribution of $50,000 or 1% of net profits directed to local nonprofits, along with annual permit, renewal and inspection inspection fees.
