Illegal immigrants have found a new way to get released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers, challenging their detention in federal courts. Since President Donald Trump's presidency, illegal immigrants have filed over 18,000 habeas petitions challenging detention, more than the number of such challenges filed over the previous three administrations combined. These petitions move detainees' cases out of the immigration court system and into the district court docket, giving them more time before their hearing comes up. In Arizona, United States Attorney Timothy Courchaine said his office saw a significant increase in habeAs petitions. Dallas-based attorney Dan Gividen has been successful in freeing his clients from ICE detention centers.
