New rules in Beijing, China, have effectively ended the availability of recreational drones without approval. The rules, which took effect on May 1, were designed to strengthen the management of unmanned aerial vehicles and protect the security of the capital. The regulations also affect the country's low-altitude economy, which is facing regulatory headwinds overseas. The new rules restrict the transport of drones and their components, allowing registered owners to carry them and keep them at "storage sites" in the city's urban core. The ban also raises questions for international travelers with drones in their luggage and exacerbates existing drone users' frustrations. The world's largest drone maker, DJI, estimates it will cost $1.5 billion in 2026.
