Anoka County, Minnesota, is using a $60,000 artificial intelligence program to screen non-emergency calls, which currently affect 733 calls a day. The goal of this is to free up call-takers to handle urgent, life-threatening emergencies. Currently, Anoka County Emergency Communications Director Kari Morrissey explains that the AI will only be used for 911 calls, but it will also send a transcript of the conversation so a human call-taker can be up to speed on what was said. The county plans to make the system active by mid-May.
