Why the world’s biggest truck makers are ditching batteries for heavy-duty hauling
Published on April 13, 2026.
Toyota Motor Corporation (Truck manufacturers) are partnering with Daimler Truck and Volvo Group to become equal partners in Cellcentric, a venture focused on fuel-cell systems for heavy-duty trucks and industrial vehicles. The goal of Cellcentric is to build better hydrogen systems, scale production, and make zero-emissions trucking more realistic. This move reflects a shift from traditional battery-powered vehicles to hydrogen technology, which is often seen as the future of clean vehicles being battery-driven for cars. Hydrogen trucks can refuel faster and travel longer distances without carrying massive battery packs, making them appealing for long-distance shipping. However, long-haul freight brings different challenges, as batteries add weight and slow charging capacity. The partnership aligns with Toyota's decades of fuel-based research and manufacturing experience, while Daimer Truck's knowledge of commercial vehicles and logistics adds global scale and operational reach. The collaboration allows the companies to share costs, accelerate development, and push for infrastructure growth simultaneously.
