A Marion County Grand Jury has found that a deputy was justified in shooting a Salem man, Juan Carlos Gomez-Valles, after receiving a 911 call from an alleged hostage. The call came from a home on State Street on March 17 and deputies responded to it with the consent of the people inside due to safety concerns. When Gomez came out of the home holding knives, he allegedly failed to comply with commands to drop them down. The Marion County District Attorney’s Office stated that while at the scene, deputies left the scene when no one answered the door. The Grand Jury also indicted Gomez-valles on charges of unlawful use of a weapon (two counts) and aggravated assault.
