Italy fails to quality for third straight World Cup in crushing fashion

Italy failed to qualify for their third consecutive World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty-kick shootout. This makes Italy the first World Cup-winning nation to miss three consecutive tournaments. The two teams had played to a 1-1 draw before Italy lost 4-1 in the penalty shootout. Italy's last World Cup title was in 2006.
