The man who threw a rave for nuclear
Published on March 27, 2026.
California's nuclear moratorium has been a key issue for environmental politics for five decades, with the state's sole remaining nuclear power plant, Diablo Canyon, receiving a last-minute reprieve from closure in 2022. Assemblymember Lisa Calderon introduced AB 2647, a bill that would allow new nuclear technologies licensed by the federal government to operate in California despite a 1976 state law that halted new nuclear in the state until federal government could safely dispose of nuclear fuel. The bill has bipartisan backing from Republican Sen. Brian Jones, Democratic Assemblymembers John Harabedian and Alex Lee, and is set to add Republican Assemblymember Juan Alanis, Democrat Assemblymember Patrick Ahrens, and Democratic Sens. Henry Stern, Lena Gonzalez and Josh Becker as co-authors. The push is part of a national moment of Democratic-led states including Illinois and Wisconsin revisiting decades-old nuclear restrictions.
