A Portland high school baseball player used a racist slur before two varsity games this month, leading to the team to forfeit two games and move all students to independent online learning for two days. The slur was used during a pre-game huddle at an April 9 game against Lake Oswego High School and again before a game against Gresham High School. The school has issued a school-wide apology and cancelled in-person classes to allow faculty and staff time to respond to students' needs. The use of the slur was not within earshot of any adults, but a parent reported it to Head Coach Justin Barchus on April 11. The team is currently 7-6 this season, including the two forfeits.
