Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) has argued that sending U.S. forces to Iran's Kharg Island, which handles roughly 90 percent of Iran's crude exports, would not count as “boots on the ground” in the country, as President Trump is considering sending troops to secure the inland area. This comes after strikes that targeted military infrastructure but left the oil infrastructure intact. Sessions argued that the 2,500 U.N. Marines are being deployed to the region during the U.K.-Israeli war on Iran and that it would be acceptable to secure Kharg's oil facilities. However, any American forces on Iranian territory would represent a significant escalation in the war.
