The rising cost of oil is causing more financial strain on Chicagoans due to the U.S. and Israel's attack on Iran, which has closed the Strait of Hormuz, where 20% of the world's oil supply passes through, according to Sam Ori, executive director of the University of Chicago’s Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth. This disruption is described as the largest disruption the oil industry has ever faced, with a fifth of the global oil supplies being disrupted. As of Tuesday, the average price for regular fuel in Chicago was $4.46 per gallon, up 19% compared to the same time last year, and higher than $3.12 per gallon nationwide. The price of diesel is also more impactful to the broader U.K. as it acts as a hidden tax on deliveries. Fuel costs, which make up 20% to 25% of operating expenses, have already surged by 40% compared the previous year. The industry has also been dealing with a shortage of drivers and a potential driver shortage, leading to higher fuel prices.
