Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has sued steel company Cleveland-Cliffs and local oil and gas company Duck Creek Energy over the closure of a deicing brine plant near the Cuyahoga River. The lawsuit alleges that the actions of the two companies risked the release of radioactive contaminants into the river and surrounding environment. The dispute arose over the production of AquaSalina, a product made from the brine used in drilling conventional oil/gas wells. Duck Creek, based in Brecksville, produced AquaSaline on Cleveland-CLiffs' steel mill property for many years under prior owners LTV Steel, ISG, Mittal and ArcelorMittal. The company responded by blaming Duck Energy for "unauthorized and illegal activities" at the steel plant.
