OpenAI has warned that as AI becomes more productive, it could leave behind ordinary households exposed to job loss, weaker safety nets, and higher utility costs. The company's Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age: Ideas to Keep People First has issued a 13-page report, warning that AI could become "controlled by, and benefiting only a few," unless governments act quickly to spread the gains more broadly. The report suggests taxes tied to automated labor, a public wealth fund that could distribute returns directly to citizens, and rules to prevent households from subsidizing AI infrastructure. It also urges policymakers to redirect some of this upside back to the public.
