A contractor from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) has begun routine maintenance repairs on Lower Shaker Lake dam. The work, which is a condition of a previous Army Corps permit, involves replacing river rock and limestone “riprap” installed for erosion control in 2019 on the nearly 200-year-old earthen dam. However, the Ohio Historic Preservation Office has yet to sign a formal agreement for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit on the Doan Brook Restoration at Horseshoe Park project. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) supports the work, stating there are no adverse effects to historic resources or endangered species habitat from this preventive maintenance work. Both mayors in Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights have signed off on a memorandum of agreement (MOA) earlier this month.
