A Central Asian ecological summit is turning shared risk into collective action
Published on April 28, 2026.
The inaugural Regional Ecological Summit in Astana, Central Asia, has focused on cross-border cooperation as a blueprint for climate change response. The summit, hosted by the Republic of Kazakhstan and hosted by international partners including the OECD, the IEA, IRENA, and the UN, included 500 delegates from government, the third sector, business, science, and civil society under the banner Bin Tamyr, which means "shared roots". The primary goal of the summit was to build a Central Asian consensus on climate change. The agenda included eight priority areas including climate transition, food security, air quality and waste, and digital ecological competencies. Astana's role as host city reflects Kazakhstan's broader desire to position itself as a leader in climate action.
