The Lebanese government has proposed direct peace talks with Israel, in an effort to end the ongoing conflict and reach a peace agreement. This comes amid concerns that a renewed war triggered by Hezbollah's decision to launch rockets at Israel, will devastate the country. The Lebanese army has not taken meaningful action against the Iran-backed militant group, despite Israel's massive airstrikes and ground incursions into southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has engaged Israeli forces in guerrilla warfare on the ground, and over 600,000 Lebanese civilians have fled the south. Lebanon's government has also proposed holding immediate direct discussions with Israel at the ministerial level in Cyprus. However, the Israeli government rejected these efforts, indicating its focus is now on eliminating Hezbollah.
