The Trump administration and Republicans are pushing for aggressive voter roll purges up until Election Day, testing the scope of the federal law that prevents mass purges of voter rolls within three months of an election. The Justice Department is using a federal immigration database tool, SAVE, to review voter registration files for suspected non-citizens and other ineligible voters. The move comes as President Donald Trump and his administration push for more aggressive reviews of voter lists for non-citizens and other non-criminally voters. While some state election officials have expressed a desire to remove names in the months before an election, others are concerned that eligible voters may be disenfranchised due to the increase in purges. The Republican National Committee is asking the Supreme Court to take up the question on the merits in a case arising from Arizona.
