Vets have warned that the seemingly harmless way you show your dog affection is causing it to react differently. Dogs that have been abused or not well-socialized as puppies may react differently, particularly those who find threatening or anxiety-inducing. Nicole Skeehan, a dog trainer and owner of Philly Unleashed, suggested that while dogs feel safe and secure, they also increase their bond with their humans and improve their mood. The best way to approach and pet your dog is to invite them into your space and not force a cuddle. Valli Parthasarathy, a veterinary behavior specialist and co-founder of Synergy Veterinary Behavior in Portland, Oregon, highlighted that dogs are often more tolerant and give more grace to people they trust.
