Ofgem refuses to fund Cotswolds pylon removal

Ofgem has refused to fund a £178m scheme to remove pylons and overhead power lines from a Cotswolds beauty spot, stating the benefits did not match the price consumers had to bear. The decision was criticised by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), who claimed it put short-term economic costs over enhancing a world-renowned tourist destination. The project, which would have led to consumers paying an extra 13p a year over a 25-year period, was designed to reduce the visual impact on land near the Cotshold Way National Trail.
