She Thought It Was Safe to Speak in Australia—Then She Was Detained in China

Chunyuan Hu, a Chinese woman who was detained in China during a family visit to Australia, has raised concerns about surveillance of Falun Gong practitioners beyond China's borders. Hu was accused of distributing information on the spiritual practice, Falun Dafa, and had arrived in Australia in April 2025 to help Sarah Xu care for her new baby daughter. She returned to China in October 2025 a few months later, but was moved to criminal detention at the Nanguan District Supervision Centre. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) responded to inquiries from The Epoch Times and cited multiple foreign regimes' attempts to monitor, harass, intimidate, and coerce cooperation from Australians and those who call Australia home.
