Florida flummoxed by ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ funding

Florida is facing financial difficulties due to the implementation of President Donald Trump's mass incarceration and deportation plan. The state attorney general, James Uthmeier, stated in a legal filing that federal funding for the name-brand jail, Alligator Alcatraz, may not be forthcoming. This comes as the state fights a lawsuit brought by local activists to shut down the jail. Despite assurances from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that the federal government would reimburse funds spent on the jail, the reimbursement still hasn't been approved. The facility has been criticized for its human rights abuses and is likened to a Nazi concentration camp.
