Protesters are demanding the closure of Alligator Alcatraz, a Florida-run immigration detention center on Miami-Dade County-owned land, after court-ordered records were released. They accused the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) of using funds intended for the facility, which they believe consolidates power and resources in the hands of the few at the expense of the many. Nancy Kasten, a Reform rabbi with Texas-based nonprofit Witness At the Border, criticized the use of these funds for the detention center, stating that the funds were intended for natural disasters rather than for the purposes of human rights. The court records also included an FDEM application for a $1.49 billion federal grant that had been allocated for $608 million. Florida lawmakers are considering emergency funding laws as part of their efforts to combat illegal immigration.
