The state constitution does not set a minimum age for gubernatorial candidates, only requires candidates to have resided in the state for four years. Roy, who has previously worked as a legislative page at the Vermont Statehouse and is aiming to start a movement that seeks to disrupt career politicians. He also expressed his desire to show that youth have a voice in politics. However, Peter Teachout, a professor at Vermont Law and Graduate School, disagrees with Roy's interpretation of the constitution.
