A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by the Trump administration seeking detailed voter data from Rhode Island, following similar rulings in several other states. The judge sided with Rhode Island’s top election officials and civil rights advocates, stating federal law does not permit the Department of Justice to conduct such a fishing expedition. The Justice Department has requested that the data, which includes dates of birth, addresses, driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers, for use in security. However, some officials have argued that such a demand violates state and federal privacy laws. The DOJ has sued at least 30 states and the District of Columbia to release the data.
