New research by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden suggests that a meat-heavy diet can prevent dementia in a select group of individuals with a genetic risk factor linked to Alzheimer's disease. The study followed over 2,100 adults for up to 15 years and found that those with the high-risk gene profile were more than twice as likely to develop dementia compared to participants without the variants. The findings could pave the way for custom nutrition strategies for those more prone to cognitive decline. However, the researchers are still trying to understand why those with APOE 3/4 or 4/4 who consumed large amounts of meat showed a lower risk of developing dementia.
