April is child abuse prevention month at Children's Hospital Colorado in Colorado, with the hospital stating that 8.1 per 1,000 children in Colorado are victims of abuse or neglect, higher than the national average. The hospital reports that child abuse is one of the leading causes of injuries and death for patients being treated for severe injuries. Dr. Kathryn Wells from the Children’s Hospital Colorado stated that some parents may not even realize they are mistreating their child and that neglect is often related to neglect. Other forms of mistreatment include delaying medical care when a child is hurt, shaking your baby, and neglect. Children's hospital Colorado Injury Outreach Specialist, Amanda Abramczyk-Thill, said 57% of trauma-injured, abused children are under the age of one. Both health care workers encouraged people to be aware of the dangers of sleeping with their baby and stress of parenting and caregiving.
