The warm weather in Salt Lake City is accelerating mosquito season, pushing it about a month earlier than usual, according to mosquito control officials. Mosquito traps detected 200 mosquitoes last week, a species not usually seen until the end of April. This is considered potentially historic. The longer season could complicate control efforts and potentially impact the spread of disease like West Nile virus (WNV). Early season mosquitoes are not harmful beyond their annoying itching. The season has also been extended several times in recent years, with west-side residents potentially seeing the worst of mosquito season as snowmelt flows down.
