The winter tourism season in Minnesota was negatively impacted by aggressive federal immigration enforcement, tensions between the U.S. and Canada, and economic uncertainty, according to a survey by Explore Minnesota, the state’s tourism office. The survey found that 42% of business was down compared to last winter, while 43% said business was flat. The tourism office's business sentiment survey also found that federal actions are impacting almost half of Minnesota's reporting tourism businesses. The most visible impact has been on reservations and events, with nearly 20% of businesses reporting cancellations or reduced bookings. The Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs saw the biggest decline in business activity, revenue and customer traffic, but tourism businesses in other parts of the state also reported trouble. A separate survey by Meet Minneapolis of over 2,000 American travelers found about 1 in 5 people had changed travel plans due to federal immigration activity, bolstering the case that Operation Metro Surge was a factor in the tourism season. The report also highlighted a decrease in international visitors, particularly from Canada, highlighting the decreased American goodwill with Canada.
