SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, is set to file for an initial public offering (IPO) to fund the use of its rocket and AI space data centers. However, Microsoft's undersea setback has warned that SpaceX's reliance on modular units that are expensive to deploy and cannot be expanded, repaired or upgraded, a feature critical for the AI industry. These issues are likely to be more severe in space than under the sea due to high rocket launch costs and the harsh space environment on AI chips. Analysts at MoffettNathanson have warned that space will be far more expensive for data centers in space, with launch costs expected to fall from today’s low thousands of dollars per kilogram to the low hundreds of thousands per kg. The cost of the project could reach tens of billions of dollars in investment. However it is estimated that to achieve Musk's goal would require 3,000 Starship launches a year or eight per day.
