Chile’s President Kast tosses out dozens of environmental protections

The Chilean Environment Ministry has suspended 43 measures, including rules on pollution, emissions, and national parks, as part of a shift towards more conservative policies under President Jose Antonio Kast. The measures were introduced during the final days of former President Gabriel Boric's term and are still under review by the Comptroller General’s Office. Kast indicated that reducing the unemployment rate was part of his motivation for the decision. The Environment Ministry downplayed the downstream effects of the decision, stating that it is "standard practice" for new administrations to update policies.
