This is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month in Lubbock, Texas. According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, 2,088 children were confirmed victims of abuse in Region 1 last year. Dr. Jennifer Hansen, a child abuse pediatrician with Texas Tech Physicians, believes that talking about abuse is the best way to bring it to light. Abby Reed, executive director for Family Guidance and Outreach, also emphasized the importance of recognizing the signs of abuse, such as sudden changes in behavior, or fear of returning home. Almost all child abuse occurs within the home or with a close family member.
