Flipboard has launched Surf, its new social app and feed reader, after over a year of beta testing. The app is designed to be a client for fediverse apps like Bluesky and Mastodon, and a tool for creating and following interesting content. It also allows users to subscribe to almost any website, podcast, or YouTube channel. Surf's only public experience is on the web, with what Surf calls “social websites.” The Verge is one of Surf’s partners in the launch. Users sign up with either Mastodon or Bluesky accounts and then create a Surf account to manage all content. Despite some technical issues, the platform is still open by design and feels like a step in the right direction.
