ThredUp, a leading online retailer for gently used children's clothes, has identified a worrying trend in consumer behavior. The company, which launched in 2009, now operates in partnership with designer brands and physical locations across the world. CEO James Reinhart stated that the U.S. secondhand market grew nearly 4X faster than the broader retail clothing market. In 2025, 59% of consumers shopped secondhand, according to ThreadUp’s 2026 Resale Report. The report also found that 72% of respondents said rising prices are impacting their apparel spending, and 27% said they plan to increase secondhand shopping to offset these prices. The profile of secondhand shoppers is also changing, with 58% of Gen Zers and 55% of millennials prioritizing buying secondhand over buying new.
