Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo) has proposed legislation to override the Food and Drug Administration's approval of mifepristone, a drug responsible for almost two-thirds of US abortions. The bill, which argues that safety concerns about the drug have been suppressed and its widespread availability has led to abuse. The Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act would allow women harmed by the drug to sue manufacturers and restrict its distribution of it for the purposes of terminating pregnancy. The drug is typically used in conjunction with misoprostol to cause a medical abortion and accounts for 63% of all chemical abortions in the US in 2023, according to the pro-choice Guttmacher Institute. The FDA estimates that the rate of adverse effects from the drug is around 0.5%.
