On Monday, Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the Department of Defense over being designated as a supply chain risk, a designation typically reserved for foreign companies deemed to pose a risk to national security. The designation prevents Anthropic from working on military contracts and blacklistishes other companies who used Anthropic products in their work for the Pentagon. However, these companies have to uproot their products if they wish to maintain their lucrative contracts. Employees from OpenAI and Google, including Jeff Dean, Google’s chief scientist and Gemini lead, supported Anthropic's lawsuit in an amicus brief supporting their case. The group highlighted the risks and implications of the designation, including that mass domestic surveillance powered by AI poses profound risks to democratic governance and that fully autonomous lethal weapons systems present risks. They also highlighted that lethal autonomous weapons systems' potential for hallucination could pose a significant issue for human oversight.
