The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has upgraded an online registry that tracks where mental health beds are available across the state. The system now updates more frequently and is connected to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. This could help people experiencing mental health crisis and recovery issues get care faster. The Automated Bed Availability function in the Behavioral Health Statewide Central Availability Navigator or BH SCAN allows providers to see open beds in real time. North Carolina is the first state to automate hourly updates to mental health bed availability. The feature is also available for alcohol and drug abuse treatment centers.
