A study by employee analytics and intelligence company ActivTrak has found that while AI is providing some of the benefits businesses expected, it is also increasing the intensity and scope of employees' work. The study, which looked at over 443 million hours of work activity across 1,111 organizations, found that adoption rates of AI tools in businesses have surged from 53% two years ago to 80% in 2025. This increase in productivity led to a 5% increase in employee hours and a decrease in workday length. However, as apps automated certain job tasks, they created new tasks that accelerated staff workloads. This shift from automating tasks to more creative, strategic, and productive work can lead to increased workloads and stress. The report also revealed that after AI adoption, time spent across work applications increased between 27% and 346%, including email, chat and messaging and a 94% rise in business management tools.
