The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is moving to block new foreign-made internet routers from entering the US market due to national security fears tied to Chinese brands like TP-Link. The move includes all consumer-grade routers produced outside the US, which could impact companies like TP, Netgear and Cisco. The FCC has warned that cyberattacks have exploited security gaps in foreign-manufactured routers to attack American households, disrupt networks, enable espionage, and facilitate intellectual property theft. The rule does not affect routers already in use or models previously approved. However, it could hinder the development of new devices in a market dominated by overseas manufacturing. Companies that produce routers abroad must now seek conditional approval before bringing new models into the US.
