California's Medi-Cal program for low-income residents is undergoing significant changes, including new limitations on MediCal eligibility for enrollees with "unsatisfactory" immigration status. The changes will result in the loss of much of the dental care available to undocumented adults, which can prevent health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The California Dental Association has called these changes "devastating impacts" for many people and a reduction of access to dental care overall. The state estimates that the dental limitation will save about $308 million in the 2026-27 budget year and $336 million per year going forward. However, the association warns that these short-term savings could result in long-term consequences for dental-care access for vulnerable patients. The reduction in coverage was part of the California state budget approved last summer but will start this year.
