Congo Republic votes in election expected to extend Sassou's long rule
Published on March 15, 2026.
The Republic of Congo is set to vote in a presidential election, expected to extend Denis Sassou Nguesso's decades-long rule by another five years. The vote is largely due to limited opposition and uncertainty about the result. Two of the country's top opposition leaders are currently in prison and several opposition parties are boycotting the vote, arguing that the voting process lacks credibility. Over 3.2 million Congolese are registered to vote, although turnout is expected to fall below the nearly 68% recorded in 2021. Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso has dismissed accusations of pro-Sassou bias, insisting that the election will be transparent and fair.
