This comes after European leaders banned US use of military bases for the Iran conflict and rejected US requests for naval support to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The United States ratified the treaty establishing NATO in 1949 and has ensured the alliance as a counter to Russia's influence in Eastern Europe.
