Popular Mexican chain joins wave of Chapter 11 bankruptcies

Mexican restaurant chains have been struggling with rising prices, inflation, rising labor costs, and a struggling economy. Major chains such as Tijuana Flats, Abuelo's, and On the Border have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Another chain, Salt and Lime 44 LLC, has also filed its own Chapter 11 Chapter 11 petition. The National Restaurant Association (NRA) highlighted that significant cost increases were not sustainable, accounting for 33 cents of every dollar in total sales. The NRA estimates that input costs have doubled to double digits across all major categories since 2019, leading to double-digit percentage increases across all food costs and labor costs.
