The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party (Bharatiya Janata Party) won India's West Bengal state for the first time, beating the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) party under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been in power since 2011. Despite this, Seema Das, a househelp in New Delhi, who had previously voted for the TMC, argued that the party favoured Muslims, an accusation that the BJP has long levelled against. The BJP had previously been marginal in the state, where it had been a marginal player. Early results from elections to the state’s legislature show that the Hindu majoritarian party is poised to deliver a majority for the BJP in a state where it has never won before. The outcome in West Bengal is seen as the most significant of the results, with nearly 92.2 million people voting in the election.
