US-Germany rift widens as Iran-war drags on

A diplomatic rift between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has escalated into a broader debate about Europe's transatlantic ties. This comes after Merz accused Washington of being "humiliated" by its failure to reach a deal with Iran and accused President Trump of having "no strategy". This has led to the announcement of the redeployment of 5,000 US troops from Germany, which has relied heavily on bases and military infrastructure across Germany during its Iran campaign. The German defence ministry has stated that there is no definitive cancellation of plans to deploy a battalion with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles and SM-6 missiles to Germany. Germany is home to one of the largest US deployments abroad and hosts the US European Command and US Africa Command headquarters.
