The french fry salad, a popular food in Pittsburgh, is often overlooked for its origins in the creation of Primanti's famous fry-stuffed sandwich. The origin of the salad was discovered in the early 1960s when a customer ordered a steak sandwich without the bun and a side of fries, adding on the fries and covering the whole thing with ranch. The fast-food joint Jerry's Curb Service in Bridgewater, Beaver County, claims to have invented the salad. The restaurant has four different types of french fry salads, including sirloin steak ($11.75), chopped steak ($10.69), breaded chicken ($10.,35), and grilled chicken ($11.,09.25). The Hilltop Grille in Rochester also claims to be the inventor of the french fry cocktail.
