The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is planning to introduce changes to the Delay Repay scheme, which allows passengers to claim compensation for late or cancelled services from third-party retailers such as Trainline for such services. Currently, all compensation claims must be made directly with the train operator, which the DfT says creates confusion and frustration. The new system will allow passengers to verify their railcard purchase, allowing them to feel confident they are purchasing valid tickets and avoid prosecution for fare evasion. The changes come in response to reports of cases where passengers made genuine mistakes when using a railcard yet still pursued for such evasion.
